Let's dive into CSS Basics - Part I. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a powerful language used to style and format HTML documents, allowing you to control the appearance of your web pages. In this session, we'll cover the fundamental concepts and syntax of CSS.
CSS Syntax: CSS rules consist of a selector and a declaration block. The selector targets HTML elements, and the declaration block contains property-value pairs.
Using CSS: You can use CSS in three ways:
- Inline CSS: Applying styles directly to an HTML element using the
styleattribute.- Internal CSS: Defining styles within the
<style>element in the HTML<head>section.- External CSS: Linking an external CSS file to the HTML document using the
<link>element.CSS Selectors: CSS uses various selectors to target HTML elements for styling. Some common selectors are:
- Element selector: Targets elements by their name (e.g.,
h1,p,div).- Class selector: Targets elements with a specific class attribute (e.g.,
.class-name).- ID selector: Targets a unique element with a specific ID attribute (e.g.,
#element-id).CSS Properties: CSS properties control various aspects of the appearance of HTML elements. Some common properties are:
color: Sets the text color.font-size: Sets the font size.font-family: Sets the font family.background-color: Sets the background color.margin,padding: Sets spacing around elements.Combining Selectors: You can combine multiple selectors to target specific elements. For example:
This applies the same font family to all
<h1>,<h2>, and<h3>elements.CSS Box Model: The CSS box model defines how elements are rendered with content, padding, border, and margin. Understanding the box model is crucial for layout and positioning.
Units of Measurement: CSS uses different units of measurement, such as pixels (
px), percentages (%), ems (em), and rems (rem). Each unit has its use cases for sizing elements.Inheritance and Specificity: CSS rules can be inherited by child elements from their parent elements. Specificity determines which CSS rule takes precedence when multiple rules target the same element.
Colors and Backgrounds: Learn about color representation in CSS (e.g., hex, RGB, HSL) and how to set background colors and images.
